i was thinking about this last night as i fell asleep... how nice it would be if i had several million in the bank to live off of. i don't need hundreds of millions, and i don't need to live some crazy extravagant lifestyle. but wow would it be nice to have the chance to live more comfortably:

i could enjoy my sunday nights without having any monday work things in the back of my mind.
i would have my days free to take dance classes.
i could do some extra work in movies without worrying i'm using up all my vacation time.
i could build a cool little modern house in a location i chose.
jack and i could take a vacation without worrying about how i'd pay off the credit card charges next month.

i don't need to be the "idle rich". i don't need to summer in the hamptons. i don't need a giant estate, or a staff, or 5 cars (jack would argue with the car thing). but time, and a little extra to do what i love... that i could use. seriously.

I hear ya.

I just want enough cash in reserve to feel like I have *choices*.

but what are the chances of us both winning?

'Cause I could totally use it, too. While I wouldn't object to an extravagant lifestyle - maybe apartments in Prague and London and NYC and San Francisco, vacation homes in Hodonin and on the Vineyard - all I really want is to get a bit of wiggle room. I don't need to pay off the mortgage (I do like the tax benefits), but paying it down would be cool. A little extra travel money, "fuck off" money in the bank...

Yep, that would be cool.

One frequent theme of my late-night musings is how little would make a difference. A few thousand would help. Ten thousand would be nice. 100 thousand would give me wiggle room. A million would be sweet.

:sigh:

When do the tax benefits of a mortgage exceed the benefits of paying it off, assuming you have the cash in hand? I've heard this one before and I've never fully grasped it.

the wealthy are always looking for tax breaks...

Or so I'm told, not having ever experienced it myself.

My financial adviser actually told me that if I ever won the lottery the very first thing to do was call him (before calling the lottery commission) and that paying off the mortgage might not be smart.

 If I ever have occasion to have the conversation that ensues, I'll let you know the details. :)

You and me both, darlin'. "Just enough to be comfortable" has been my motto for years.

Yes, indeed.

It's good that you don't have the "must...have...more" drive, as so many people do. and the only reason jack would want 5 cars is so that he can work on them, and that's different.

Funny. Our wishlists are super-similar (sticking to the personal-desires wishlist, naturally I have an Eleanor wishlist too).
