the situation: i want to eventually put some video of me hooping on the tailspin website. but i need to find music to hoop to that is legal (i full understand that i can't just take my favorite songs and pop them onto my website for free).

my questions:

1. i've heard of the "creative commons license" for some music, but my understanding is that music can be used for non-commercial purposes. since my website is mostly commercial, i'm assuming i wouldn't be able to use creative commons music then, correct?

2. do any of you know of any way for me to get the rights to use a portion of a song on my site for only a couple hundred bucks? i can't afford thousands of dollars in legal fees and music rights, i jsut want to find a cool danceable song that i can dance to, film it, and pop up the youtube link on one of my pages.

2. do any of you have recommendations for sites and/or specific songs that don't suck and would be hopefully reasonably priced to use?

Honestly, I'd just write Jonathan Coulton a note and asked him if it was okay to hoop in front of Code Monkey.

Also - I'm pretty sure that if you ask nicely, the Industrial Jazz Group would be happy to let you use some of their stuff. Check out the site (http://www.industrialjazzgroup.com) and/or ask [livejournal.com profile] xtingu. Most of their stuff isn't 'thumpy', but could possibly work and is definitely fuuuuun (which isn't a bad thing to associate with your hoops. :) )

Yeah, we're all about giving our music away (that's not snarky, it's sincere). Granted, it's not the thumpitta-oontz-oontz-woooodely-woo you're (I'm assuming) seeking, but "Bongo non Troppo" makes me dance my fool ass off, with its super-jammin' disco section at the end. You can get it (and some of our other stuff) here.

But yeah, Jerm's link to Creative Commons should give you a delicious plateful of awesomeness.

Wooot!

(Oh yeah: the happy part starts around 3:50. The disco starts around 5:53.)

Oh crap, I forgot about the 'dirty striptease' during Howl. That's a good time... hits at about 4:10. You can find that tune at the same site as above.

OK, I'll stop plugging now. It's grossing even me out.

i love "bongo non troppo", but you're right, it doesn't have the right beat to hoop to. HOWEVER, "void when detached" might work really well! for what i'm thinking of doing, slower might be better...
