yesterday was a lot of fun, despite the searing heat all day. i dragged D out of bed early to go to dim sum with a bunch of his friends (his buddy A: "you come out with us, regardless of whether he gets out of bed or not")... i hadn't been to dim sum in like 7 or 8 years, so it was basically a new experience for me. wow, was it great. a big noisy room filled with people, no decorations on the walls, just lots of eating and conversation and people rolling carts around while shouting out their contents. fun fun fun! like a fool though, i didn't pace myself... i had one piece of each thing they ordered, and within 5 minutes i was stuffed. when i leaned back from the table, A turned to me and was like, "um, jenn, this is only round 1... we have 2 more rounds of food to go." oof. i tried bascally anything i'd never had before, and avoided the familiar stuff to save room. the one thing i had a hard time with was the whole shrimp salted and fried... i love shrimp, but the combination of having to eat the shell and having to eat the head was a bit too much for me. those little black eyeballs were staring at me, and i just couldn't do it. eek.
and tell me how 10 people ate our faces off for 2 hours solid, and the bill came to only $11 per person???? how the hell do they stay in business?
the rest of the day was pretty relax-ey... napped for a bit in the afternoon (i was sunburned and tired from wandering around chinatown), watched some tv, made dinner at like 9pm when we were finally hungry again (grilled hotdogs, i'd been craving them... mediterranean potato salad... pickles), and i was passed out soon after midnight.
oh... one thing we discovered in chinatown: "tangerine snacks". no, they weren't happy little dried tangerine pieces or anything... they were these little chewy bits that looked like mini cubes of beef boullion in a jar, shelved in the candy section of one of the chinatown markets. ingredients? tangerine, salt, and licorice. blecch. about half the table tried one at the dim sum place, and they were just nasty. you tasted mostly salt and licorice, i don't know why the hell they even bothered putting tangerine in there. i have to go back to that market though, the next time i work in chinatown... too many cool foods to check out, and fun packaging to look at!
