rivers and tides
May. 26th, 2005 04:16 pmif you haven't seen this documentary, wow. put it on your netflix queue now, stop everything and just do it. if you haven't heard of it, it's about a scottish artist who has a more Eastern appreciation of nature, and channels that to create his art. he works with what he finds in a certain spot to create these amazing works that celebrate both the materials he's using and the surrounding landscape... fully knowing that, because of the nature of the materials and environment, the piece could be destroyed before he's even finished. for instance, in one scene, he spends an entire morning building a huge hollow cone made of stones on a rocky shoreline... only to have the whole thing collapse outward when he's halfway done. i can't even give it justice in my description... he's just a fascinating guy, and the stuff he makes is almost heartbreakingly beautiful. i mean, look at this: it's freaking icicles that he gathered and fused together.
that movie was the highlight of my afternoon. i took today off, because i just couldn't face putting on a suit and going out in the rain AGAIN. so i went to the gym, went back to bed for another 4 hours, watched that movie, and then got my nails done. MUCH better than work, i must say. :)
