saturday morning, i was at the supermarket getting food for the weekend. in the soup aisle, a forty-ish guy stopped me and asked, "excuse me, have you ever heard of 'ginger day'?" i didn't know if this was a pickup line or the beginning of a joke, but i played along and replied that i hadn't. he told me that his middle-school-aged son had told him the day before that that day had been "ginger day" at school, where the kids all sought out their redheaded classmates and shoved them. i thought it was a load of crap... until jack found this: http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/11/22/california.redhead.attack.facebook/index.html

well, that's just great. another excuse for kids to be mean to each other. thank goodness this particular kid wasn't too badly hurt.

So stupid.

From what I've heard, the anti-redhead sentiment is more prevalent in the UK. I have a friend there, she's a grown woman and really quite beautiful, yet she still sometimes gets called names by kids and adults alike. Stupid!

Yeah - except that, when I was a kid, every day was 'kick a ginger day'.

Towards the end of high school, that did shift. Thus the 'Orin Story (http://mrlich.livejournal.com/289455.html)'.

Kids are very, very cruel. It's why I wanted more than anything else as a kid to dye my hair obsidian black. I know now that it wouldn't have worked, and likely only increased my problems by showing 'them' that they had won, but I certainly wanted that then.

I'm a fellow redhead too. (which I'm very proud of, it would hands down be my favorite physical feature)

That is terrible. Kids are so mean, especially middle school/high school aged. I feel like it all starts at home.

As for that South Park episode, they make fun of EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. I actually thought that episode was funny, but hate that it was taken out of context.
