swingchickie: (angus)

what could angus mean by his behavior in the video below? there are a couple of outdoor cats in the neighborhood who come through my backyard once a day or so... and every time angus sees one of them, he smacks the window. he doesn't yowl or hiss, so it doesn't seem super-aggressive to me... and the cat outside just sits there and stares at him, so he doesn't seem to feel threatened.

so, is this more "hey, you miserable kids, get off my lawn!", or is it "hi! spring me out of here so i can play with you!"??

That looks more like "Lemme at 'em! Lemme at 'em!" than "Let's play!" to me.

He probably just wants to play. My cat does the same thing when we put his "cat video" on -- it's a video that just has segments of butterflies, fish in an aquarium, a squirrel running around, mice in a Habitrail, etc. Anyhoo, he gets on his hind legs and bats at the TV. If an animal runs off screen, he'll sometimes look around the edge of the TV for it. I usually have to sit there and make sure he doesn't actually jump into the armoire with the TV and knock the whole thing over!

I think it's neither.

I've seen cats do batting like that at TV screens (basketball games) and reflections in mirrors and glass and so on. so it could be playful. His tail is switching, so it could be negative. I've seen cats flirt through closed windows by rubbing their sides against glass, which Angus is clearly not doing.
I think it's curiosity. I think he knows that if he makes a noise on the glass they will look at him. So I think it's "Hey, who are you? Who are you?" Or it could be, "There is a cat here, we don't need any more." or he could be signaling to them and marking at the same time: "I'm the cat here! This is my house!"

Ok, I am babbling.

I vote "curmudgeon"

The tail twitching looks like (minor) agitation to me.

But wtf do I know? It's been 15 years since I had a cat. POOR ME.

His tail looks puffed to me. He's pissed, and wants the glass to get the hell out of his way.

dominick does that at the window sometimes... i think it's a "hey, i'd like to be out there! right now!" kind of thing. dom's always been an indoor cat so i think he remembers now and then that there's an outside and gets excited about it...

His tail looked a little puffy, but it seemed like he was trying to interact with the outside kitty. When our cat sees an outside kitty, it is thru the full-view screen door in the front, and she gets puffy, and yowls like crazy, and there is no mistaking that she is not happy, but then again that is thru a screen, not glass like Angus.

The tail seems aggro to me, but lacking hissing, I'd say it's more along the lines of "STRANGERS ON MY LAWN OMG WTF I MUST SMELL THEIR BUTTS." More like a border patrol thing, less like defcon 2.
