i was beyond disappointed to find out that this story was untrue. i remember seeing this couple on oprah a couple of years ago, and crying my eyes out at how beautiful their story was.

for anyone who hasn't heard the story: when the man was young, he was in a nazi concentration camp. at one point a little girl came to the fence and handed him an apple. for months, every day he'd meet this little girl at the fence, she'd give him an apple to eat, and they'd talk. cut to years later -- he's living in new york and gets set up on a blind date. as he's talking to the young woman, he discovers that she was the young girl at the fence all those years ago. they got married soon after and have been married for 50 years.

turns out part of it was a lie. yes he was in a concentration camp, yes he met his wife of 50 years on a blind date. but they hadn't met before that blind date. he claims he made up the story as a way of bringing some joy and hope to people. i can't help but wonder, how did it get started? did he go to his wife and say "hey, why don't we tell people we actually met when we were kids"? why did she go along with it? and was there no-one in their lives who knew it was a lie? didn't any of their friends say at some point, "this is odd, you never told us this before"?

sigh. this really bummed me out. it was such a wonderful story.

and we thought the Katzenjammer kids were funny.
