vacation weekend!
May. 29th, 2007 07:19 amwow, time to go back to work already. meh. i had such a nice weekend, with several BBQs, good friends, way too much food and some awesome much-needed naps thrown in the mix.
saturday was low-key... did some errands, dad came over to grill some hot dogs, then after a massive 3-hour nap (i was still exhausted from the work week) i headed over to jack's. his neighbors were having a cookout, so we chilled on their patio into the late evening, until i couldn't keep my eyes open anymore.
sunday was an early day. jack and i went to a small local car show for the seasonal debut of his '55 bel air. god, i love that car... it's absolutely gorgeous, and just tears up the road. (and jack and his dad rebuilt it from the ground up.) driving to the show saturday morning, with the windows down and reverend horton heat blaring on the stereo, hearing that engine going rrrrRRRRRROOOWWWWWRRRRRmmmmm around us, was already one of the highlights of my summer.
so, this is the bel air, or as jack and his father have nicknamed it, "the rumble bee".

interior shot -- i love the little "rumble bee" pillow. as far as car decorate-y things go, that was tame... there's something about old car collectors, that so many of them pack their cars full of giant stuffed animals to help with the display. i don't get it. you have an amazing old car, why do i want to see a 6' tall carnival-won purple poodle stuffed animal peering from the backseat? or a massive tasmanian devil on the hood? *sigh*.

hard to see in this photo, but the steering wheel is yellow glitter. hee.

us with the rumble bee

there were a lot of fun cars there... this one, parked next to us, had me completely drooling. not only was it in amazing condition, not a single thing on the car had been changed. this car had been kept in a garage, in pristine condition, for 50 years, and finally the owners decided to sell it. the current owners who brought it to this show had only owned it about a week. to say i was jealous is an understatement.

this was another fun one -- this 22-year-old guy who was the spitting image of sid viscious drove in behind the wheel of a 1970-something hearse. hard to see, but that's a custom-built coffin leaning against the back.

LOVE the "vacancy" sign in the window. *chuckle*

overall, it was a fun day... we met a lot of really nice people, saw some gorgeous cars, and both got violent sunburns even though we were under a canopy and wearing sunscreen. *sigh*.
yesterday was a BBQ with some of the philly/delaware peeps... jack was the master of the grill, as well as the master of the rum punch and master of the swimming pool. seriously, i love that man so much... he busted his ass all day. first it was driving alllllll the way home to pick up the massive bottle of rum he'd forgotten to pack... then back at my place, he juiced lemons and limes and mangoes and cooked down some simple syrup and did all this hard work for his rum punch. THEN, he spent what seemed like hours inflating and filling the kiddie pool in the backyard (him: "honey, this isn't a kiddie pool. this is a real pool." me: "no it's not, it's just a little inflatable one." him: "honey, it's 8 feet across and has a filter system." me: "oh.")
jack inflating the pool:

THEN, after all that, he manned the grill for the entire day, cooking up burgers and hotdogs and grilling fresh pineapple rings for something sweet to nosh on. yum. he's so awesome. so it was a day filled with lots of laughter and music and running doggies and inflatable pool splashin' and men trying their hand at hooping (and some of them doing quite well... leave it to
jeremym to freakin' do the "limbo" move as an accident, when i can't even get it down on purpose. *chuckle*).
now, back to work. 4-day week, though... woo-hoo!
