he hasn't been around since the smoke detector playfulness when i first moved in, so i thought he was gone... but now he's back and his sense of humor is more wicked than ever.

i woke up this morning and, like i always do, turned the thermostat up. (i don't sleep with the heat on... i like it a little chilly 'cause it's good for snugglin' under the blankets, and heck, i'm sleeping through it anyway.) so, when i turned the heater up this morning, instead of the little "whoosh" i normally hear from the heater as it kicks in, all i got was silence. hrm. took my shower, tried the heater again. nothing.

by the time i got home tonight from my department holiday dinner, the thermostat said my house was a toasty 45 degrees inside. i was already freaked out because my co-workers informed me that broken heating system = frozen pipes = possible huge water damage in the house... and the thought of sleeping in a 45-degree bedroom wasn't making me happier. (i said i like it a bit chilly, not ARCTIC.) so i tried the thermostat again. no whoosh, no heater. so i called my warranty company and gave them my info, and they gave me a number to call tomorrow morning to get it fixed.

just as i got off the phone with the warranty company, my blind date boy from saturday called to chat. i told him the heater saga, and he suggested i check the circuit breaker. so i put the phone down, walked towards the stairs, and heard the heater running. ??????? i looked at the thermostat -- it was turned off. so, um... turn the heat on, nothing. turn it OFF, heater kicks in sneakily. hrm.

all i ask is, please, PLEASE, if this is a poltergeist, let it be one that will keep the heat on now. at least until i can bring in a mechanic and a priest.

OooooooOOooooooooooooo! But seriously, did anyone die in your house? I have a friend who's sister and brother live in a "haunted" condo. An old man died there. He apparently turned a hall light on and unlocked and opened a bedroom door while the girl was home alone washing her face. In the guy's room, children's hand prints keep showing up on his mirror (in different places after he washes them off). I saw a picture of it too. I've been hearing a lot of ghost stories lately. I'd like to say that I don't believe in ghosts, but the stories scare me and give me the chills, so does that mean I really do?

Stay warm!

By "he" turned the hall light on...

I mean his ghost.

I don't know where the child hand prints are coming from. Maybe there is more to the story than just the old man dying there?

There've been a whole lot of creepy 'moving around' sounds here at the casa del Quito and Matt. I've always had a hard time believing in ghosts, but this place is making a believer out of me. Know any tricks to keeping them happy?

As long as you're having Capable People coming out to look at things and work their electrical magic, you might think about replacing your current thermostat with a programmable one. You can get them with 4 time "zones", programmable for work days and weekends (or even different each day of the week). The advantage is you can set it to turn the heat on 30 minutes before you wake up, cool off while you're at work, warm up in time for you to get home, then cool back down at/before bedtime.

My old boiler couldn't handle it, but the new one likes it just fine.
