slept in this morning. i needed it, i have been running around all weekend (in a great way) and last night i was finally able to just let my body take however much time it needed to rejuvenate. i feel GREAT this morning.
L2 didn't get in on saturday until around 1:30pm, poor thing. 7 hours driving in the rain, she is the best friend ever for coming down in those conditions! and she didn't even want/need time to veg out when she got here, we went right out for sushi and then ran some errands for the cookout. came back and it was still pouring out, so we popped in my netflix DVD of "roll bounce" and reveled in all of its cheesy teen movie-70's nostalgia-amazing rollerskating glory. by the time the movie was done, we had to make a decision: what to do that night? plan A: blacklit capoeira in the city with the philly peeps. plan B: catch a band at a bar a few miles away. plan C: karaoke at the townie bar down the street. we decided on plan D: get decadent ice cream at cold stone creamery and lay on the couch and watch reruns of "project runway" and be asleep by 11. perfect!!!
yesterday i was up early to start cleaning the house for company. there was a lot to be done, especially with piles of downed branches scattered all over my lawn. i chopped up about half of the downed branches and piled up the rest before i tackled the inside of the house. L2 and my dad were such a big help, among the 3 of us we got everything in order and the food made just in time. i couldn't have done it without them.
the cookout was really nice. i was a little curious to see how it would go, because with the exception of the philly peeps, no-one knew each other. i had friends there from all different periods of my life: my best friend since 8th grade with her husband and 3 kids, L2, one of my best friends from college, B and a friend that she brought, my buddy P (my Musikfest bud), my family, my realtor who's also friends with my mom. but everyone seemed to get along well and i had a ton of fun. we turned the deck into a dance floor for a while, and the kids turned the austin powers room (or "makeout lounge", as B called it) into their playroom, and i turned the glorious apple pie that
jeremym brought into a late-night post-salsa-dancing glorious snack.
yes, salsa dancing. the cookout wound down around 9pm, and the philly peeps being the crazy bastards they are, went into the city to go salsa dancing at rock lobster. L2 had decided to drive back to boston around 7 (yes she's nuts), so i had the late evening free... so i mustered up my second wind after the long day and met up with them. i was thiiiis close to not going... as i was getting ready and trying to look presentable after being sweaty and running around all afternoon, i looked at the sink full of dishes and at angus's happy face (he'd been cooped up in a bedroom all day) and really wanted to stay home and crash. but i threw on a sparkly top and a ton of lipstick, eyeliner and hair putty, and hauled it down to the city to shake my boo-tay on the waterfront.
i'm so glad i did! the place was packed, the live band was great, and i had some fun dances (including 4 or 5 songs in a row with a really good dancer who kept wanting to dance with me, w00t!).
boutell has become quite the salsero (do i have that word right?) and was out there workin' it... actually, there were some freaking phenomenal dancers there. seriously, at one point i turned to B and whined, "how come all of these cute white boys with amazing rhythm are HERE instead of swing dancing??? can't they do both???" i realized last night that, if i want to do partner dancing in philly, my best bet is going to be salsa, both because of the sheer number of fabulous dancers and the number of places to actually do it. so get ready
boutell, you're going to be seeing a lot more of me at these gigs from now on.
so, fun FUN weekend. just the right mix of whooping it up and chillin' it out. got to hang with some great friends and eat fabulous food and listen to kickass music and shake my booty (which i am paying for today... sooooore). today is chillin' at home and enjoying every last minute of the long weekend. *happy sigh*. happy labor day everyone!
