it amazes me how quickly my life can switch from relaxing, fun vacation weekend to absolute hell.

this week, and the next couple of weeks, are turning into a nightmare. on so many levels. and i'm not exaggerating when i say that i'm not sure how i'm going to handle it all:

work: i have a project due monday, that i've barely started yet because i'm in class all day this week. i'm in class-mode from 6:30am to 8pm, and then somehow have to wrap my brian around this project, whcih is hard to do. THEN, i have another one due in 2 weeks that i haven't started yet... and i won't get the materials to start it until this friday. factor in the holiday weekend, with boston folks coming in to stay with me, and i'm smelling a disater.

home: the home front is even worse. my handyman is coming in tonight to finish re-wiring my downstairs outlets... i really need to get a dehumidifier down there, because my downstairs bathroom has been a bit moist. well, i went into the bathroom last night to clean it (i'm hardly ever down there), and it's bad -- mold all long the baseboards, and big sheets of paint peeling off the walls. those i can deal with once the dehumidifier does its thing, but it's the even WORSE problem i'm worried about -- PLANT ROOTS crawling along the tile floor. there was nary a root anywhere when i moved in last month, and all of a sudden they're coming out from under the baseboards, and even out from under the toilet! i'm freaking out that my house is going to crumble to the ground in a matter of weeks. and the thing is, who do i call? a landscaper, to dig up the yard and pull out the roots? someone to re-do my foundation? i fear that i'm looking at tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, and i don't have a penny for it. oh my god.

IANAL. I would engage a real estate attorney ASAP and give him copies of all the documentation surrounding the sale of the home. If you were not made aware of the vegetation problem prior to sale and there is a reasonable chance of proving the previous owner knew about it, then you should have a case against them. Failure to disclose is a big deal, AFAIK. This is where your friendly neighbor is probably your best friend, if you want to stick her in the hot seat between you and the prior owner.

You may have a cause of action against the house inspector if the problem should have been found as part of a reasonable pre-sale investigation.

But, before calling in the lawyers, I'd call in a foundation specialist or a good general contractor for an understanding of the problem and potential solutions.

I agree though, that sounds like an expensive fix.

Sorry :(
