like a good neighbor...

swingchickieone of my neighbors stopped by tonight, the woman who lives in the house behind me. i'd met her last weekend when i moved in, and i've been trying to figure her out ever since. coming recently from boston, and having lived in apartment buildings for the last 10 years, i'm very used to not knowing the people around me... in contrast, L is not just friendly, but also has a much more intimate knowledge of my hosue than i do. she grew up in her house, and has been in mine through every owner and every renovation, so she knows every nook and cranny.
this is a good and bad thing. good because she's not afraid of the dark and creepy crawlspace, and she knows every old and damaged tree (and has offered to cut my lawn for $25 a time, YAY!), and knows everyone in the neighborhood. bad because, well, i'm immature and i feel odd that she knows SO MUCH about my house that i don't know, which makes me feel less like the owner. (and her comments don't help, like tonight... her: "i hope you didn't mind the pile of branches that i left in your yard after i pruned your tree the other day." me: "i didn't even notice it." her: "*chuckle* yeah, i didn't think so.")
so tonight she came by with a couple of beers to say hi and chat. and look around my crawlspace. and tell me all about the people who lived here before me, who she became SUCH GOOD FRIENDS with. i'm glad i got a chance to talk with her a bit, and i feel kind of bad that i haven't been more neighborly and gone over to say hi before this... i just have to get used to having friendly people around me who want to be social, after keeping to myself for so long.

I think it's brilliant ... and if only all neighbourhoods around the world were like that eh!?!
Things were more like that when I lived in Perth, Australia (my home) .. but since living in the UK I've noticed people here keep alot more to themselves. shame.
