swingchickie: (house)

i didn't fall asleep until about 3am, because of some really freaky noises. i had just fallen asleep around 11, when i heard what sounded like hundreds of cicadas singing in my backyard, and one in the house. they'd go for maybe 10 minutes, then quiet down for 30 seconds, and then start up again. finally after about an hour, i got up to see if i could find the one in the house... as i stood half-asleep in the upstairs hallway, i realized it was coming from my smoke detector. both the "lone cicada" and the "hundreds of them" noises. it was the weirdest thing... i know that when a smoke detector starts to lose battery life, it chirps once a minute or so for a couple of days... but this was totally different. it was like this static-y, hissy sound, punctuated by frequent chirps. i finally fell asleep around 3, and started having these freaky half-awake dreams that the smoke detector sounds were actually because i had ghosts in the house, and they were playing with it to get a good laugh. ugh.

other than the poltergeists, the move yesterday went fine. mom and dad came over with hoagies and a teeny little cake to celebrate... they spent a good chunk of time cutting rolls of liner material to size, lining all of my kitchen drawers and shelves, while i went to go pick up "the baby" (mom's name for angus).

"the baby" has adjusted incredibly well to the house. he did his talking-to-himself thing for a few hours while he checked out the place, and then settled right in. his favorite places so far are the top of the stairs (so he can see the entire downstairs) and the windowsill in the kitchen (we're going through a power struggle, 'cause i don't want him up there). he's loving all of the trees and grass... all of the places he's lived have been high up in a building, so he's never been able to see stuff like that up close. he just sits in that window and stares and stares.

oh... and talk about adorable... i woke up in the middle of the night last night, and angus was the snuggliest he's ever been. at one point, he was doing the "making biscuits" kneading thing on my back, purring up a storm... then another time i woke up to find him holding my hand. my hand was palm-down on the sheet, and his little white paw rested on top. awwwwwwww.

fridge is coming any minute... THEN it's a party! woo-hoo! [livejournal.com profile] jeremym stopped by last night, when are the rest of my philly peeps coming over to see my haunted house? BBQ next weekend perhaps?

The first few nights in a new house are kind of strange, aren't they. All of these new noises you aren't used to and the vague unfamiliarity with the room when you first open your eyes. My house in Michigan took a lot more getting used to than the house in Denver did, probably a combination of age and size (not that my house is huge, it's just much bigger than the house in Denver). After a few nights, though, I got used to the different noises and they became home.
