had dinner with mom yesterday after work. we went to her favorite local italian place, where all the customers are over 65 and a serving of pasta is basically an entire box of Ronzoni. we only talked a little bit about what's going on with my uncle... mostly mom wanted to talk about her relationship issues. (advice to all of you: if the love of your young life, your "one who got away", shows up in your life 40 years later and wants to try having a relationship again... RUN LIKE THE WIND. people do not change.)

as i dropped her off at home, she thanked me for listening to her problems:

mom: i just needed someone to bounce some ideas off of.
me: no problem, it's fine.
mom: it's just hard... uh... *searches for the words*
me: i know...
mom: it's hard out here for a pimp.
mom: wait, that's not what i meant!
me: *goes completely hysterical*

i love my mom. only she could get tongue-tied, and somehow end up quoting "hustle and flow".

I haven't seen "Hustle & Flow." Your mom is hipper than me.

People do change, but the burden of proof is on them. (:

yes, my mom is a very interesting woman. she's a sweet, demure catholic gal who goes to church every week... who also loves leopard-print clothes and watches "sex and the city". she's awesome.

i'm skeptical about people changing. maybe a bit, but not 100%. i don't think a womanizer can change to go most of his life being monogamous, or a really insecure person becoming totally confident. i think even if it's not totally blatant, there will always be some vestige of the old self inside.
