i am still house-less. the cute, smaller cousin of my "dream house" was already sold (in 2 days, darnit), so we couldn't look at that one... which left the dream house, a townhouse, and a drive-by of another that we couldn't get an appointment to see. so...

dream house: nah. it had a lot of the characteristics i want in a house, especially the hardwood floors and exposed brick... but... too much house for me (do i really need a 3-story place? no.)... a backyard that was so shady, no grass could grow there so it was all dirt and just a few lonely patches of grass... several strips of the siding on the back of the house had been peeled off, exposing all this old insulation (why wouldn't you fix that before your house went on the market?)... and i know this sounds dumb, but the basement was spooky. like, "silence of the lambs" stone walls and darkness and dampness spooky. i'd never want to go down there. oh -- and those cool dark-stained columns leading from the living room to the dining room? fake. bought at lowe's or home depot, stained by the owner (and they weren't meant to be stained, the wood was really rough when you touched it), and the top and bottom of each column was too big for the archway, so the tops stuck out from the arch really REALLY noticeably. ick.

drive-by: ick. the neighborhood was adorable, every house we passed i was like, "ooh! cute!" it was all little bungalows and cute duplexes. except for the one for sale, which was just old and ugly and boring. bleh.

townhouse: this was in the same development i looked in the last time. we counted 6 places in the development up for sale, which is a big red flag that something's wrong (these places were just built within the last 2 years). the best part? a big sign from the township on the front door saying "NOTICE: NOT FIT FOR HUMAN HABITATION". hee. from what it looks like, the owner stopped paying their water and sewer bill, and the water was shut off... which i guess would make it technically unliveable. we went in anyway and it seemed fine, but again, too much house for me. and too generic -- white walls, cream carpets, and no character to any of the rooms... it would be like buying the apartment i'm living in now. eh.

looking at 2 places next week that should be more my size and taste. we shall see. *crossing fingers*

Bummer.

Look in the city! Why? Absolutely no good reason, other than my selfish happiness of course.

i would LOVE to get a loft in the city! but between the city wage tax, the 2% title transfer, and the 90-minute-each-way commute to work, i just can't. *weep*

Admittedly, if your work isn't anywhere near here, it's darn tough to justify.

There's a major tax break for IT firms in Philly. They should consider it for health-related firms as well, because they are mostly nonpolluting and obsolescence-proof.
