i seriously did NOT want to go to this speed-dating event tonight. i had had a really disappointing day at work (there's a scathing post lurking inside me somewhere on the subject), and the last thing i wanted to do was make myself look semi-presentable and plaster on a fake smile and chat with 8 guys i wasn't remotely interested in. but i had promised i would go, and it would keep me from sulking with a pint of ben & jerry's in front of the tv, so i hauled myself to a bar in paoli to get it over with.
it was a pretty simple concept... there were 8 women, and we each sat at a numbered table... the 8 guys there rotated around every 6 minutes, so in a little over an hour we'd meet everyone. it was a mix of people i'd expected -- a couple of good-looking, nice guys with potential, and a few awkward ones for whom 6 minutes was WAY too long to have a conversation.
and then nametag #5 came to my table.
he walked up from behind me, and said, "aha, you must be jennifer r___." it took me a second, but i froze... because no-one's last names are on their nametags. how would he know my last name? i looked up at him with, i'm sure, a bewildered look on my face... and as soon as he said his full name, i knew who it was: "elusive yahoo guy".
let's pause for a sec so i can explain elusive yahoo guy (whom i'll call "C" now). i posted about C somewhere earlier this year, but can't find the post... this is the guy who is from boston, who just moved here a couple of years ago... who was forwarded my profile from a friend of his, and who joined up just to meet me. the guy who i'd been e-mailing back and forth for 3 months, but had never met, because we just couldn't seem to mesh. i was traveling too much to want to deal with getting to know him via e-mail... he seemed nice, but a bit too vanilla for me... we voicemailed each other once, but never got each other live on the phone. it was just a bland boring internet thing with no chemistry, and i wasn't interested in trying anymore. we stopped e-mailing each other about a month ago, and i figured we'd never talk again.
so cut to tonight... and C was sitting across from me at the table... and there was nothing bland or boring about him at all. in person, he was fiesty. funny. incredibly easy to talk to. a teeny bit geeky-cute. he wore glasses *drool*, which wasn't in his yahoo picture. and there weren't just sparks flying, it was a full-on fireworks display. when the speed-dating thing was done and everyone went home, we went to the bar and talked for 3 and 1/2 hours longer... laughing our butts off and finally getting to really know each other, without the internet getting in our way. he admitted to me that he'd thought about me on the way to the bar... he said i'd popped into his head for some reason, and he'd had this weird feeling that he was going to see me there tonight. and as soon as he walked in, he saw me and recognized me from my picture, and there you go.
so, i left the bar completely giddy. what started out as a crappy night turned out to be an absolutely wonderful surprise. and yes, we're both still too busy to see each other this week... but we already have 2 dates planned for next week. whaddaya know.

Date: 2006-03-29 02:01 pm (UTC)The guy I dated before Peter was lexicographer and a trumpet player in a swing band. I met him online, though we'd been at the same venue at least a couple dozen times.
Weird how things work out...
