swingchickie: (missing piece)
went out for drinkies last night to celebrate the b-day of one of our local lindyhoppers. i was one of the first to arrive... soon on my heels were 2 girls, one i knew and one i didn't. the girl i knew is nice, but we've never really struck up a friendship. she has this sort of distant, aloof thing going on, it's not really bad, it's just what it is. but every time i see her, i try to be really nice, and figure out something we have in common or whatever.

so last night, she was wearing this beautiful turquoise beaded necklace that looked great on her. and of all things, i happen to own the exact same one, and haven't worn it in years. so when i saw her, i gushed, "oh wow, your necklace looks great, i have the exact same one!" she looked a little surprised, and went on to talk to her friend for a bit. when we were back in conversation a few minutes later, the subject of the necklace came up again, and i told her that i should start wearing mine again because i'd forgotten what a pretty piece it is. i asked her where she got hers... she looked at me funny again and said, "um, i got this in an antiques store in new hampshire." to which i replied, "um, i got mine in the south shore mall. sorry..."

so because of some clueless (or shady) antiques dealer, this poor girl has been walking around for who knows how long, telling people who compliment her on the necklace that it's an antique... when in reality it was made in like 2001 and was sold in malls all over the country for around $30. and i was the one to break it to her... which i don't think did much for the "building a friendship" thing. ugh.
