that i could be so exhausted from walking around the mall yesterday? granted, K and i spent 7 hours there, with only about a 10-minute starbucks break... i'd love to know how many miles we walked, since we did the whole mall and then some. we were both wiped out by the time the place closed, i came home and checked e-mail and then crashed with "miami ink" on the tv. what DIDN'T get a workout, i'm proud to say, is my wallet... i just got a sweater and suit jacket for work (much needed), and a fun dressy sweater to wear out in the evening (i figure i should get something that makes me look non-schlumpy if i'm going to do this blind date thing).

i got some great news when i checked my e-mail this morning: mark erelli is coming to PA to play a gig in a couple of weeks! w00t! D got me into him when we were dating, and i know i've written at least one post about seeing him live (too lazy to find it tho)... and i can't believe he's coming down to PA from maine! yay! i seriously thought that once i moved here, i'd never see him play live again. he is just so wonderful to see in person, and his music is fantastic. (his song "snowed in", about rushing home in crappy weather so he can get snowed in with his wife, is just too romantic. *swoon*) so needless to say, the night of the 10th is blocked off on my calendar. it's going to be me, and mark, and a big freakin' cup of chai(and anyone who wants to join me)!

lastly,

forgot to post about this the other day... wednesday night after my big disney excursion, i decided to force myself to stay awake and go to karaoke at the house of blues with a couple of teammates. i had to be up at 4am thursday morning, as i had 2 teleconferences before i had to leave for my flight back to PA... but i figured, how many times will i get to see karaoke at the house of blues??? so i slapped some cold water on my face and walked over to the club.

the place was packed. seriously packed, you could barely move. and by 10:30, when they started karaoke, there was already a list of like 10 names on their clipboard. i was a bit nervous at the thought of singing in front of this massive crowd of people, but i threw caution to the wind and signed up. i was around 12th on the list. i got myself a beer (for courage) and a glass of water (for my throat) and sat there, sipping, waiting to be called and praying i didn't make an ass of myself.

2 hours later, i still hadn't been called, and i was way overdue for bed. some people had been up twice already, and i didn't know what the deal was... i finally decided to check in with the girl who was emcee-ing, and see what was going on.

me: hi, i wanted to see if i'm up anytime soon? i put my name in quite a while ago.
her: *heavy sigh* we'll call your name when we come to it.
me: well, i have to GO soon... if i'm not up for a while, you can cross my name off the list.
her: *rolls eyes* when do you have to go?
me: a half hour ago.
her: what's your name?
me: jennifer...
here: *goes back a page to find my name* um, yeah, i need to make a new list... um, stay. really, stay. we'll call you.

i went back to my seat, fuming that basically this girl had been calling all of her friends up to sing and completely bypassing my name. but she said she'd call me in a bit, so my co-workers agreed to stay and we waited.

they called someone up to sing... then another person. and another. and another. and i was seriously ready to smash a beer over that girl's head. i went back up:

me: hi... you can cross my name off the list, i HAVE TO GO.
her: *rolls eyes* you mean you're not gonna sing?
me: well, unless i'm next on the list...
her: *checks the new list she's been writing up, she's got about 10 names on there so far and i can see upside-down that i'm not on there* um, i'm writing up a new list...
me: yeah, i can see that. forget it, cross me off. *stomps away*

i was there until one in the morning, when i had to be up at 4, for nothing. grrrrrrrr. GRRRRRRR, i say!

Wow, that sucks. Your first song of the night jumps anybody who's sung before, period end of story. Them's, like, the rules.

Okay, even a certain DJ of our acquaintance has been known to grease things along for a tip... but shutting out other singers entirely is way out of line.

Karaoke DJs live and die by the goodwill of venue owners. And the guy paying the rent cares very much about unhappy customers. A letter to the venue would probably get a fire lit under that chick's ass. If the image is amusing enough to justify bothering. (:

Yeah, I would have been tempted to go with the "smash a beer over that girl's head" route, or at the very least, throw it in her face.

[I know, I know, the things we say we're going to do, but never do...]

Of course, that would have been a waste of a perfectly good beer, and that's just not right!

exactly! :)

what makes it even worse is that the dj herself got up to sing several times... my feeling is, as the dj, if you have a long list then you don't bump other people to feed your own ego. you're there to announce people, and fill in some lulls if necessary. grrr.

She was up several times?? Oh, what a <insert expletive here>! Like the Anon poster above suggested, mabye fire off a letter/email to the venue to voice your displeasure. It might not accomplish anything, but it'd sure feel good ;)
