D and i had SO much fun on wednesday night! we went to a screening of this year's 48-hour film project, 'cause boston was one of the 2005 cities. for those of you who haven't heard of this, basically each year the project picks a number of cities worldwide to go to... on a friday, people in that city show up with the intent of making an 8-minute movie in one weekend. they're given a character name and profile, a prop, and a line of dialogue, all of which they have to include in the movie... then each team picks a genre out of a hat. they then have until sunday evening to write, cast, film, and edit their movie, and get it to the drop-off location, to be included in the festival.

this year's picks:
character name/profile: J. Withers, a former child star
prop: a strand of pearls
line: "I'm not really like this"

so wednesday night was one of the first screenings of some of the movies... it was an absolute blast! the kendall theatre was packed with all the people whose movies were being shown, as well as all their friends and family. the crowd was really pumped to be there, so the energy in the place was fantastic. and as each movie started, everyone was cheering and whooping and really supporting each other. and i have to say, some of them were really really fun... there was everything from action to mockumentary to romance, to foreign film (the beginning of that was a riot... a fellini-esque opening with J. Withers playing chess on a rocky beach with Death)... there was even a musical.

my favorite was probably the horror movie though... it starts out with a girl, a former cast member of a teen show called "high school high", driving to a house to tape a "surreal life"-style show with all of her former cast members. J. Withers, one of her former cast members, greets her at the door and shows her through the house, and all of a sudden bonks her on the head with a rock and knocks her unconscious. when she wakes up, she's tied to a chair in the basement with her other castmates, and one of them is dead. it seems that J. Withers has gone insane, and is making them all reenact one of the show's most popular episodes... and if a person gets a line wrong, he murders them. and he's capturing it all on videotape. the whole thing was really smart and clever and funny. :)

more will be shown this coming week (which i'm SO psyched for!). there's a group of local folks who did a movie with swing dancing in it called "three left feet", i can't wait to see it...
