swingchickie: (cat)

i had another "stray cat day" today.

this morning i walked into one of my medical buildings, and looked up at the balcony on the second floor, to see a woman in a yellow suit holding a black moon-faced kitty in her arms. i did a double-take, because you just don't see animals in medical buildings often. (except for when i worked on cape cod... every doctor it seemed brought their dog to work.) i went to my customer's office and waited in the hall since there was a rep already in there... and as i waited, the woman and kitty came down the hall. turns out she works in the management office upstairs, and the kitty was a stray... she figured maybe one of the doctors brought it in to work and it got out. (um, NO.) the problem was, the other people in her office wanted it out of the building. it makes sense, i mean, if she (the cat, not the lady) went to the bathroom in the hall, or had fleas or something, it would be a health issue for the patients coming and going... but god, my heart just went out to this little fuzzy face, and i didn't want her turned out into the cold.

i asked the woman to go back upstairs and call animal control, and told her i'd look after the kitty until the officer got there. she agreed and went back to her office, leaving me in charge of the little fuzz-face for a few minutes. but the thing is, she never came back down. i followed the kitty up and down the hall, up and down the stairs, for over a half hour... and no-one ever came to get her. at one point, she went through an open door, which happened to be an office under construction... it was bare bones and empty, just a cement floor and walls and lots of drywall all over the place. she beelined right for a small pile of plaster dust, and laid down and rollllled around in it until she was good and gray. *sigh* she was such a doll, though... she'd let me hold her for a couple minutes at a time, and she'd just sit calmly in my arms and purr and look around... then she'd jump down and claw the hall carpet, or stretch out in a sunbeam. at one point, another rep came in the main door and instantly melted the way i had. she gave me her cell #, and told me to tell animal control that if no-one claimed the kitty, she'd adopt her and bring her home to her 2 other cats.

after almost an hour, i was starting to get antsy. i had to work, but i had promised that woman i'd take over the cat-watching until animal control got there... and my fear was that if i went upstairs to her office to talk to her, the building people would just boot the cat out the door. so while i was standing there pondering, a guy came walking by, looked at the cat, and said to her, "oh, it's you." "you know this cat?" i asked him... he said he recognized her from the area, and that he thought she might live next door. i explained the situation to him, and told him someone was supposed to call animal control... he said he worked with the woman upstairs. then he told me he had 2 cats of his own, and that to him, the best thing to do was let her out of the building and let her find her way home. and with that, he scooped her up, opened the main door, and put her outside. i was horrified. i stood there watching as she twitched her tail, looked around, and then scampered off around the corner and down the street. and the thing is, there was nothing i could do... it's not my building, or my cat... i was just a babysitter for a bit. i just pray that she finds her way home... and that she hasn't been hit by a car on that busy road.

*sigh* seriously, i feel like i should be able to jump into my tote bag, and come out sporting a cape and brandishing a gold leash.
