new year's thoughts
Jan. 10th, 2005 02:52 pmso, i spent a good chunk of the weekend inside, due to another boston snowstorm. actually, it wasn't so much snow as slush... when i was out in it on saturday, these big slushy sheets were thwapping against my windshield. it was pretty cool -- all these snowflakes clumped together looked like those groups of people who skydive and all hold hands in a circle as they plummet to earth. except in this case, i guess the little snowflake chutes didn't open. leave it to me to take a beautiful snowstorm and turn it morbid.
anyway, while i was home, i got in a really contemplative place. and i hadn't really made any new year's resolutions, 'cause i hate breaking them, but i thought a lot about how i can live my life better and be a better person this year. so here's my list of things i'm grateful for in my life, and how i'm going to use them to make a better 2005.
I'M GRATEFUL that my health is pretty decent. last year i was a physical mess, but things are back on track. and it could be worse... i'm blessed that i don't have cancer or god forbid, something more awful.
SO, i'm going to treat my body like the gift that it is, and take care of it. eat nutritious food instead of junk. exercise instead of sitting around. drink water, get my flu shot in the fall. sleep plenty. get fresh air and sunshine.
I'M GRATEFUL that i have all my senses. i'm not blind, or deaf... my mind is sharp... i can walk around with ease. today i saw 2 seperate men in wheelchairs trying to navigate icy sidewalks, and it hit me how lucky i am to have my basic faculties.
SO, i'm going to use my senses more fruitfully. go to live music shows. take in more art exhibits. read more. surround myself with people who challenge me intellectually. go dancing as much as i can, because someday i won't be as mobile.
I'M GRATEFUL that i have such wonderful friends, and a family that's good to me. the people affected by the tsnunami over the holidays lost their loved ones in a heartbeat... they would pay anything to have the love i have in my life.
SO, i'm going to be better about keeping in touch with those i care about. call people instead of waiting for them to call me. get back in touch with long-lost friends. spend time with my family when i'm home, instead of running around seeing otehr people.
I'M GRATEFUL that i make a good living. i'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but i got my year-end pay stub last week and thought, "i made THAT much last year???" and all i have to show for it is some new clothes and a ton of restaurant receipts.
SO, i'm going to take better care of my finances. instead of eating out every night, i'm going to make myself dinner (which is healthier anyway), and save eating out for special occasions. i'm going to cut down on the impulse shopping. and i'm going to finally start saving for a condo.
happy new year, everyone. and may you be blessed this year.
