yesterday was so much FUN! i had left the day open to sort of "wing it", and it ended up being a blast. the day before, at the BBQ, my friend M heard me talking about wanting to see the new art deco exhibit at the MFA, and he asked if he could come with. so we decided to meet up yesterday in the late morning and go to the museum for a while. we met up at 11am in the square for lunch... actually he was about 15 minutes late, giving me plenty of time to work on avoiding this obese guy in sweatpants who was wandering around my area shirtless (in the 50-degree temps), muttering to himself and picking up cigarette butts. finally M showed up and we had to decide on a place to eat. he suggested a restaurant i'd never heard of, called "mister crepe"... turns out it was only 2 blocks away! i've had this awesome crepe place right down the street the whole time, and never knew it! had an excellent lunch (crepe filled with lamb sausage, baby spinach, caramelized onions, yellow peppers, and goat cheese), and then headed into the city to hit the museum.

the MFA was mobbed because of the holiday weekend. after getting our tickets, we decided to grab a soda before we headed in, since we were really thirsty from lunch and the exhibit was going to take forever to get through with all those people. the downstairs restaurant was full, so we headed upstairs to see if we could get a soda in the lounge. great decision. the lounge was an awesome scene, with a mellow jazz combo playing in the corner and a bunch of people eating brunch in this funky burnt orange room. instead of grabbing a quick soda, we sat in the bar area and ordered drinks (i got a peach mojito... YUM) and listened to the live music for a while. M loved it, i think it's going to be the place he brings all his first dates from now on to impress them. ::grin:: after we mellowed out, we started at an exhibit in the smaller gallery by the artist team of tim noble and sue webster. talk about art speaking to you -- most of the installations were made of neon and blinking lights. eeeEEEeee!!! <-- girly scream. it was like a big room full of bling. they had another piece that i found to be both artistically and technically brilliant... it was a pile of household trash sitting on the floor, and at first glance it just looked like a bunch of old dirty cans and boxes and stuff. but there was a light shining on the pile, and looking up, it turns out that the light turned the garbage into a shadow silhouette of 2 people sitting back-to-back, in incredible detail. i just loved it.

the art deco exhibit was fabulous. i coveted everything i saw in the displays. stunning, bold jewelry by cartier... slinky beaded gowns by jean patou and chanel... sleek, jeweled cigarette holders and lighters and ashtrays that almost made me want to smoke again. and the furniture... everything inlaid with ebony and mother of pearl, even a gorgeous desk that had been coated in white gold to make it gleam silver. *drool* i just walked around with my tongue hanging out. and the museum did a really neat thing... considering that art deco style (which wasn't named "art deco" until later on in the 60s) drew on a lot of other cultures, like greek and asian art, in several places they had art deco items such as dishware... and then next to them were examples of the influences, such as greek dishware from 320 BC, so you could see the similarities. it was awesome.

we stayed until the museum closed, and then M went to shop at the filene's cashmere sweater sale (he's such a metrosexual) while i went home to grab dinner and nap. we were meeting up again with L1 for the evening, and i needed to replenish my energy. well, i got home, put on my jammies, and climbed into bed to nap, when... *sniff, sniff*... oh NO... one of the cats had decided to pee on the MIDDLE of my mattress while i'd been out. now, besides being really frustrated and angry, i was worried... because peeing outside the littler box often means that a cat is in pain from it... and considering angus's past bladder issues, and that male cats can die from it, and that this was the 2nd time in a week, i was worried that angus had been the culprit and that he was sick. so i gave him a children's aspirin and crossed my fingers, and wondered if i was going to have to throw my mattress out. but the gods were with me... i stripped the sheets, and then pulled up my foam mattress pad to throw it out... and it turns out, the mattress pad had acted like a sponge and soaked up all the urine, so there was NONE on my actual mattress! thank god.

after a quick nap, i showered and dolled up to go out for the evening. L1 called me to bail, which was a shame because she would have loved what we had planned -- an evening at the Milky Way Lounge filled with the most interesting people imaginable. i'd read that morning about a benefit going on there, a performer named karin webb was heading out to CA to attend dell'arte's theatre program (kind of like "clown college"), and proceeds from the evening would help with her tuition. the place was jam full of people, most of them friends of karin's from her artistic endeavors. i felt like we were crashing a party full of the coolest people in boston. there were examples of every possible sexual persuasion, age, fashion sensibility... next to me sat a platinum blonde in a painted-on vintage lace dress, chatting with a girl in an earth-mother-y baggy dress with long brown hair. over at the bar was a dreadlocked woman in 6-inch heels, black shiny spandex pants, and the tightest push-up corset i've ever seen in my life.

the performances at the benefit were all by friends of karin's, and i was amazed at the display of talent! the show was opened with an acoustic performance by the dresden dolls... they did a makeup-less guitar version of "the rainbow connection" that brought down the house. and after that was a blinding whirl of entertainment -- stand-up comedy, music, dance, poetry readings. even karin's parents got in on the act -- her mom read a poem she'd written for her daughter, and her dad did an interpretive reading of a dr. seuss story. (it was great -- her dad was up there in shorts and a t-shirt, looking like a suburban mowing-the-lawn kinda dad, whirling around doing a dr. seuss monologue. what cool parents.) there were too many acts to mention, but here are some of my favorites:

* "evan o'television", a guy who does a stand-up routine with a video of himself. he did a whole 10-minute riff on bush and the upcoming elections, while arguing with his video image.

* "the walsh brothers", a brother duo in hooded sweatshirts, who read a hysterical fairy tale about 2 little boys who get sent to catholic school and get hit on by one of the priests.

* one of the guys from "daredevil chicken club", who had also studied at dell'arte, showing karin what she'll learn in mime class. (it involved various mimed sexual acts that were painfully uncomfortable and funny.)

what a great evening. fun people, great art, lots of laughing and a room full of love for this girl who had touched so many lives in boston. one of the best nights out i've had in a while.
