if you haven't voted yet, please go to www.hooping.org and click on my "fall hooping in the park" video. for those of you who have voted already, if it's been at least 24 hours, please consider returning to the site and voting again. (if you vote even minutes within a 24-hour period, all of your votes will be removed by the site.) i'm up against some stiff competition, including one video that has about a dozen people in it... that's a dozen people all getting their friends and family to vote, when i'm just little ol' me. so sorry for the begging... but you have until friday night to vote, spread the word, help a hooper out! thanks guys!

in other hoop news, i'm shipping those hoops to australia today. i'm dying to see if they actually get there.

and lastly... to my fellow WW peeps... what suggestions do you have for eating at a thai restaurant? all i really know is masaman, which is very creamy, and pad thai, which is pure starch. i'm doing "core", so i want to stay as close to it as possible... but i'm having dinner with some WW folks who are all on flex, so i can't go by what they order.

I voted! I'll vote each day until Friday. Yay!

Thai food: try tom yum soup (it's a clear broth soup with lemongrass, a touch of thai chilis, mushrooms and optional chicken), a salad called yum neua (sliced rare beef in a spicy lime dressing over lettuce) and larb, which is ground chicken (sometimes they'll have a pork or beef version too) in a lime chili dressing... Almost like the stuff in ubiquitous asian lettuce wraps but better. You should be good with any of those.

Those dishes are all noodle-free, and the rice comes on the side.

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions 'cause my favorite dish is "Drunken Noodles," which shows up on menus as that or as "Pad Kee Mao." It's less soupy than some other noodle dishes (like rad nah) and tends to have more vegetables, which is good.

I think [livejournal.com profile] xtingu's tom yum soup suggestion is right on.

I don't know what "core" means, but a lot of Thai restaurants have a dish where they take a whole cornish game hen, marinate it, skewer it, and serve it with nothing but garnish. (At the place [livejournal.com profile] boutell and I used to go to all the time in Seattle, they would flambé it at the table, and it was called "Volcano Hen.") If the portion seems to big, maybe it could be a family-style dish for the table.

that hen thing sounds awesome, never heard of it! thanks!

("core" is basically a south-beach-type way of choosing foods to eat -- whole grains, fruits and veggies, lean meats, healthy oils, in whatever quantity it takes to make you feel full but not stuffed. as opposed to their "flex" plan, where you eat whatever junk you want as long as it stays within a points range.)

yay, thanks for the votes!!!!!!

the larb sounds awesome (awful name though). i'll have to look at their menu online and see if they have it.

Oh -- I was guessing that "core" was like Atkins. Well, a volcano hen, if the restaurant has it, probably doesn't fit that. Where I've seen it on menus, it's just a roasted game hen with Thai basil and spices. But I'm sure you'd be more familiar with the rules than I would!

Aw, man, it's making me smile to remember taking friends out to that restaurant and convincing them to order a volcano hen!

There are tons of curries with lots of veggies. Most of the Boston-area Thai restaurants have brown rice, or you could have it without rice.

My favorite is often called rama garden, but sometimes some other sort o' garden. It's protein plus steamed veggies, with peanut sauce. If you dip into the sauce instead of spreading the yummy goodness all over everything, it's a healthy choice.

I'll vote again when I'm sure my 24 hours are up. :)

Maybe I'm dumb, but I cannot find the list of Hoopie videos to vote on when I go to that site. Maybe it's done now?

I actually read this as "fail hooping in the park", which would have been a pretty funny video :)

Yeah, sometimes the translations are a little funny. I've seen larb called "laab" or "larb gai" ("gai" = chicken).

If you wanna link to the menu, I can tell you what's what.

I voted twice so far, and will get at least a third one in before the polls close. Had a busy week in work, so I screwed up on Tuesday. I also forgot to wear pants to work, I was in such a rush, so don't take it personal.
