last night i started my holiday cookie-baking... i wanted to give my teammates at work something for xmas, so i bought each of them a nice small platter and will load them up with cookies. the ones i baked last night looked awesome in the recipe (i'd ripped it out of a martha stewart magazine last year)... they came out awful. they were supposed to be "bourbon pecan chews", instead they were "bourbon pecan cookie sheet full of chewy stuff that's going in the trash". i guess i didn't chill the dough enough, so everything melted together in the oven into one giant cookie-sheet-sized mess of goo. sigh.

my building is already getting quieter. there are some people who didn't have a chance to take vacation time this year, so they have 3 weeks off in december so they don't lose it. whoa. one of my current project's deadlines got extended by a couple of weeks (yay), so i can actually take my time at the end of this year and not feel so stressed. that makes me so insanely happy.

speaking of the holidays... philly peeps, who's off during the week at the end of the year? if anyone wants to go to a weekday matinee movie or anything, let me know.

hoop orders have picked up a teeny bit in the last couple of days... funny thing is, i'm not sure which new advertising attempt is bringing them in. is it my banner ad on hooping.org? is it my google adwords? hrm. i'm updating the site this weekend with some of the suggestions you guys made the other day (thanks!) so we'll see if that continues to help. and i'm thinking that i'm going to have to raise the cost of my glow-in-the-dark hoop after the holidays... the glow tape is so expensive, i barely break even on those hoops (and they're my most popular). so if you want a glowy hoop, get it now.

sorry to hear about the cookies - but trial and error, right?!

as for your hoop business - i've been reading your posts of late and your desire to grow on the net, etc. when you're ready, you should reach out to marilyn (Sex Dwarf) - her daytime gig is to consult businesses in entering the world of web 2.0 and online/viral marketing etc etc etc

just file that away for later :)

My trick for cookies is to chill the dough in the fridge before baking the cookies. I start with everything at room temperature so that I don't burn out the motor on my hand mixer with hard-as-rock butter when I'm putting the dough together. But if try to cook the dough from room temperature, the butter melts before the cookies bake, and the cookies all spread out and over-cook. So I prepare the dough, put the bowl in the fridge, fire up the oven, and bake the cookies one sheet at a time, returning the bowl to the fridge after each time I fill the sheet.

yeah, that's the patr i didn't count on. the directions said to chill the dough for at least an hour... so i pulled it out after exactly an hour and it wasn't very firm. i should have put it back in the fridge, but i was being miss impatient and there ya go. :)

Making cookies is more chemistry and physics than actual cooking!
