got up at 4:45am. *cringe* it was for a good reason -- i decided to spend part of my morning with the preston & steve morning show from WMMR. i'm a huge fan of the show, and not just because i used to work with preston a million years ago at Y-100... they're just freaking funny and they make my morning every day as i drive in to work. this time of year every year, they do a week-long event called "camp out for hunger", where they broadcast from a tent in a shopping center parkling lot, and ask listeners to come down with food to donate to Philabundance... and when they're done broadcasting every day, they sleep overnight in an RV right there next to the tent.

anyway... i was listening to them the other morning, and it hit me that they might be going a bit stir-crazy living in a parking lot for an entire week... so i decided to make them a hula hoop in the WMMR logo colors and bring it down as a gift ("camp out for hunger" happens to be like 10 minutes from my house). i made what turned out to be a beautiful hoop (orange glitter, gold mirror, and black grip tape), and brought it down this morning along with another ready-made hoop i had on hand.

thank god i brought the second hoop -- when i walked into the tent, what's the first thing i saw? Toys for Tots. oops. i couldn't very well gift some hoops to the morning show and ignore TfT, so i gave the second one to TfT and and made a mental note to bring more hoops to donate later. in the meantime, WMMR hoop in hand, i went outside to give it to one of the interns. i explained why i brought it ("i thought you guys might need to blow off some steam during the downtime, etc.") and went to hand it to her... "oh my god, the morning show would love this! give this to them!" she exclaimed. i told her i felt awkward because they were on the air and i didn't want to interrupt... she grabbed me and said, "come on, i'll introduce you." um, ok. so we went into the tent via the front door, just as they went back on the air after a break... live on air, they turned to us and yelped, "hey!!!! a hula hoop!!! is that for Toys for Tots?" (thank god i had donated the other one!) "i gave them one, this is for you guys!" i replied.

at their next break, one of the guys came down to say hi and get the hoop... i explained what it was for, he said it was awesome, and then he put it "backstage" out of the way. with all the listeners in the tent, there'd be no room for them to use it until later, which i'd figured. i stayed for about an hour, had a cup of coffee, and watched them broadcast which was really fun... but after a while i felt odd being there by myself and headed home.

about 3 hours later, i got back in the car to run some errands... as i backed out of the driveway, i wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying until i heard Kathy say, "OOH! AND THE HULA HOOP!!!" i almost ran off the road. all day i was wondering, had they talked about the hoop after i'd gone home? shoot, should i have stayed? aaaaiiiieeeee!!! so as i type this, i'm listening to the podcast from the rest of the broadcast, to see if there was any talk of it. too funny.

so, that was my morning. the rest of the day was awesome, i had lunch with a girlfriend from boston who was in town for the day... did some Xmas shopping... then napped and went out for sushi with my gorgeous boyfriend. i'm debating whether to go back to the tent early again tomorrow -- stephen lynch will be live, which would be a blast, but 4:45am again? ouch.
