you are scheduled to do 2 completely different things back-to-back on a saturday night, and you have to figure out what to wear. party #1 is a formal shindig, and you've heard that a good-looking celebrity of the opposite sex is going to be there. party #2 is a completely casual barbecue deal, and you've heard that a member of the opposite sex whom you've had a crush on for a while is going to be there. the parties are back-to-back, and there will be no place and no time to change.

would you:

a) dress casual for the whole night, or
b) dress formal for the whole night?

This is where being a guy has benefits. Being slightly overdressed in a white shirt and slacks goes to being formal when you add the tie and jacket.

It's so obvious

You go formal for the evening but in a set rather than gown then, at the bbq when you see your crush, go topless.

Jeez, do I need to tell you everything?

I'd go formal. When people wonder at the barbeque why you're formal, you tell them it's because you just got back from a formal event.

"I've got a barbeque later" doesn't work quite so well when you're underdressed though. ;)

Formal. No-brainer, man. Unexpected formalwear is always hot, when you have a good excuse to be wearing it. Just make sure it's not boring formal. A tuxedo (or equivalent female splendor) is never boring. For semiformal garb, definitely don't go with the boring funeral suit or equivalent, unless you're actually attending a funeral (hitting on hot celebrities at funerals? You shameless hussy you!)
