had a kickass time thursday night. went to see the Reverend Horton Heat play at the middle east, and as usual he completely rocked. i really really liked one of their opening bands, the detroit cobras... they put on a great show. i'll have to get their CDs this weekend.

the only problem with the show was that we were 2 of only a handful of women in the whole place (psychobilly is a big male draw)... so basically we were in a sea of drunk, really dumb-acting guys. it was amazing -- they were more starstruck and silly than a bunch of girls at a britney spears show. seriously. having worked concerts for years in my "younger days", i felt the need to come up with a list of concert rules based on our experiences thursday night:

1. do not try to have an entire conversation with the band during their set. it may seem possible, if you are up against the stage... but contrary to what you might think, they are there to play for everyone in the room. trying to shout entire paragraphs at them over and over again for 2 hours, makes you look like an ass.

2. if you want to slam, fine. but do not assume that everyone around you wants to. if people are slamming, jump on in. but do not turn around to the person behind you and shove them to get them involved. if they want to get in there, they will. otherwise you look like an ass.

3. if you are slamming, you're on your own. do not use one hand to brace yourself against an innocent bystander while you shove people with the other. if the bystander wants to get involved, they will. they don't need to be shoved by you.

4. if you get to the show late, stand in the back and suck it up. all the people up by the stage got there early, and waited hours and hours, so they could see the band up close. if you are late, you do not have the right to shove through everyone to get to the front. you are not that important. and if you do this, just be aware that all the people around you will be praying you get hit by a car after the show.

5. if you are up by the front, and the crowd is tight, certainly move a bit and enjoy yourself. but do not flail around and dance all over the place. the people around you do not want to be touched by you. they don't want to be smacked by you, or pressed by you, or have you repeatedly hit them in the backs of the legs with your knees.

6. if you see a girl you think is attractive, and you want to talk to her, go for it. but if she politely gives you a signal that she's not interested, don't keep going. don't try 50 other ways to start a conversation with her, don't look for excuses to touch her. that will not make her more attracted to you. neither will starting a fight.

7. if you've been drinking a lot, and get beer farts, GO TO THE BACK OF THE ROOM. the people around you didn't pay $20 to have the air taste like your ass.

why oh why can't i be a fan of classical music... so much more civilized...
