performance anxiety
Feb. 20th, 2007 06:24 ami have been saying for years that i'd love to start competing/performing on an actual dance team. i love doing jack & jills at dance weekends, but there's something about doing an actual choreographed routine that really fires me up. problem is, pretty much every group that competes is made up of fantastic dancers who all happen to be friends and decide to put something together... i'm just not part of any in-crowd where i'd get that kind of opportunity. and now, lo and behold, there are 2 dance teams forming that i'd actually have a shot at... and i'm not going to be able to do either.
team #1 - i saw last week that dance manhattan is holding auditions for a team they're putting together. choreographed by heidi groskreutz (w00t!), coached by michael frank (w00t w00t!). yes, i would actually be willing to drive up to manhattan every tuesday night for 3 months, getting home around 1am, just to have the chance to practice and compete on that level. yes, if they were willing to look past the fact that i'm not a size 2, i think i'd have a shot at getting on the team. but they're nebulous on all the times/places they're performing... besides competing at 2 big events this summer, there will be a number of performances at new york dance nights and such that have yet to be determined. and that's my problem -- i don't know that i could go to all of those other nights up in the city, unless i knew ahead of time when they were, because they might interfere with work. i just can't make a commitment (if i got on the team) to a group of that caliber, unless i know i can follow through on it 100%. meh.
team #2 - the folks who run a dance in NJ just put a dance team together as well. don't know what the caliber of dancers is, because when i've been to their dances everyone's been more at the beginner/low intermediate level. but since it's an actual choreographed dance team, the quality might be better. practices are not as often and more local than NY, and i'm sure i could get on the team with my experience. the problem? i need a partner. they didn't audition individuals, they're looking for couples, and i admitted to them that i didn't know anyone in the area who's at performance level. they said they'd let me know if they came across any guys who are partner-less... but yeah, like that's gonna happen.
so, meh. no luck this time. i'll just have to start getting out more and keeping my eyes and ears peeled...
