the surreal life
Apr. 6th, 2005 09:53 pmcame into contact with an interesting cast of characters last night. D and i decided at the last minute to meet up in harvard square and go to finale, a totally decadent "dessert restaurant" that i looooove. i was late getting to the T, and in my rush got stuck behind a college kid paying for his fare with nickels and pennies. as he counted each cent out, i could hear a violinist busking downstairs on the platform. the tune was driving me crazy, it was beautiful and sounded so familiar... then i realized what it was: "careless whisper" by wham. *guffaw* i finally got my tokens and rushed through the turnstile as the train pulled in... and even though it made me almost miss it, i had to fish out a dollar as i ran down the stairs and give it to the kid with the violin for being so freakin' cool.
in harvard square, D and i browsed through the magazines at out-of-town news and then headed towards finale. as we turned down a side street, we saw a store we hadn't noticed before, a little place filled with RPG stuff. we went in to peek around, and very quickly realized just how hardcore this place was... there were game boards and figurines everywhere, covering every inch of space, including a super-elaborate setup in the middle of the room. the store manager was, i swear to god, the comic book guy from the simpsons turned flesh and blood. his looks, his voice, it was completely unnerving. and he was so excited to have 2 new people in his store, he followed us around and kept asking us if we'd like him to show us how the game is played. thank god i got a phone call and stepped outside to take it... but mid-call, i looked in through the shop window and saw the manager leading D into a back room where a game was going on. i seriously wondered if i'd never see him again, it was so eerie. but he managed to extricate himself as i finished my conversation, and we hightailed it to the restaurant for piles and piles of sugar.
it was fabulous, no surprise... we snacked on bruschetta and a cheese tasting plate, then got down to business. i'm not even sure what dessert D got, all i know is there was a lot of chocolate, and the most amazng sorbet i've ever tasted -- blackberry cabernet. *drool* mine was much lighter, a honey-flavored sponge cake with a scoop of cinnamon-stewed apples and a big blob of vanilla mousse. yummy yum yum. we talked and ate for 3 hours, and then 5 minutes after we got home i was snoring. *grin* you know you're tired if a big plate of sucrose can't even keep you awake!
speaking of sleep, i'm off to bed... going to try to hit the gym on my own in the morning. eek.
