took another vacation day today. seems silly to go to work for 1 day, then have the weekend. but god, it's going to be hard to work all next week, after almost 2 weeks off...

so, after some thought, i decided not to hash out what happened over xmas. i'll just say that every year when i stay at my mom's, a few days after xmas we end up getting into a screaming match over something. she gets moody around the holidays, and i end up being the lucky recipient because i'm staying with her. and this year was no exception.

on a good note, it was really nice to see my friends while i was home. i went country dancing with an old buddy of mine, and actually remembered some of the dances (but i'm so out of shape)... xmas day itself was nice, my family all got together and everyone was well behaved. *grin* and i spent several hours with my best friend and her husband... i only get to see them at xmas, 'cause they have kids now and can't come up to boston... but we hung out all afternoon, and her parents came over too. we had margaritas and caught up on everything... it was really nice. i also saw 2 friends from college... one was my college roommate, and we've stayed friends over the years... it was hard to se her, because she's in a really bad way. her long-time boyfriend (9 years) died last xmas, so this year i knew it would be rough for her... but mentally, she's just not right. she was absolutely zooming while the 3 of us were together. like, she always tends to orchestrate a conversation... she'll ask questions of people and steer the topics to what she wants to talk about, that kind of thing... but this time, it was 100 times worse. she'd interrupt everyone who was speaking, then talk for several minutes... then she'd ask someone a question, and as they started to answer, she'd interrupt them and go off again. it's hard to explain to someone who wasn't there, but it was very frustrating and disturbing. by the time i got home, all my muscles were sore from clenching them in an effort to stay quiet. she called an apologized, and told me she does that to a lot of people now... i don't know what to think.

new year's was fun. went down to connecticut to be with the b.f.'s friends from college. it was like a big sleepover, everyone hung out in their sweats and played games (and ate a ton -- i was in pain from too much food!). the b.f. got to show everyone one of the gifts i got him (well, it had been for my friend's son, who already had them) -- a pair of spy goggles that help you see in the dark. they're a riot, they look like big ski goggles with bright blue/green lights on the sides. they were a big hit. and they came in handy -- he came to bed several hours after me, and i woke up at 3am with a blue light in my eyes... he was wearing the goggles to try to find his jammies in the dark! i howled.

so, that was the holidays. the kitties are home from the sitter (they are sooo happy, it's been non-stop purring since last night), i still have 3 days before work again, and lotsa fun stuff planned for the weekend. life is good.

if only my pick for "world idol" had won yesterday... guy sebastian i am amazed that he ranked so low on every country's votes... he was the only person in the competition to actally do his own arrangmeent of a song, instead of a karaoke version of it. i got chills when i heard him sing. am i the only one in the world with taste???
