my modem's being wonky, and i'm not sure what to do. could any of my apple-using friends point me in the right direction? i have a wireless card and it's getting a full signal, but my computer won't connect to the 'net. how do i access my modem and check it out to see what's going on?

If you are using OS X, under the Apple menu, select Location, then Network Preferences. Under Location (with your Location chosen), select Modem from the Check drop-down. That should at least tell you the status of your modem.

You also mention a wireless signal; however, your modem and your AirPort card are two different things. If you don't have a wireless router, then it sounds like you're picking up a neighbor's signal.

yeah, there are a bunch of signals in the area, i've been using one that i think comes from a local coffee place. it's odd, because i've been using it fine for a month, now all of a sudden i can't connect to it.

basically, it tells me that i'm connected to the network, but when i followed your instructions it told me i don't have an IP address. why would i lose my IP address out of nowhere? hrm...

It's entirely possible they could have gotten wise and set up a firewall or pay-to-play service to prevent bandwidth thievery... like yours... which I still totally condone, 'cause the intarweb should stay free...

the thing is, i can connect fine on my company laptop (how i'm still posting on LJ)... it's something specific with my computer, i think. bah.

(btw, cool mention of y100rocks in the citypaper this week, did you see?)

I'm just about officially stumped for now. However, since you brought up y100rocks...

- We have used Apple wireless internet to send out our feed, although I think this weekend I was told we went to an actual network cable connection because it was more reliable. At Bunker 2.0 (not so much here at 3.0) we were able to reset our connection to see if we could get back online. "Reset" = turning off the Mac, cable modem, and wireless router; waiting a minute or two; then turning the modem and router back on first, followed by the Mac. Sometimes that worked. I will guess you've tried it already, though...

- The article? An excellent read. The City Paper -- A.D. in particular -- has shown us quite a lot of love this year. They got JOSH T. Landow's name wrong. Silly copy editors. I'll be on today from 12 to 5pm. Listen through iTunes (Radio > Alt/Modern Rock > "Y100 Rocks"). Heck, since you know the address, you could even stop by. I've been interested in meeting you anyway...
