just took a work break to go outside and cut a few blooms off my lilac bush. i put them in a vase with the tulips i got at the supermarket today, and already the whole house smells amazing. one thing i hadn't done before this spring is cut flowers from everything that's in my yard... for 2 years i've let them just bloom and die, which is crazy. so i finally took advantage of the exploding forsythia a few weeks ago, and this summer i'm going to go crazy when my hydrangea blooms. but now i get to enjoy my lilacs... *inhales*

seriously. i am so just so gloriously happy this time of year. this morning at 6am, angus started his usual "feed me, feed me" wake-up routine... but instead of it being pitch-black outside, the sun was starting to peek through the windows. and the birds -- the tweeting from hundreds of birds singing in the neighborhood was almost deafening. it's like they're having a kegger every sunrise to celebrate being back together. it's one of my favorite sounds in the world.

yesterday was an exhausting but awesome day. who knew it was going to take 2 people 7 hours to paint a bathroom, and not even finish? jack got to tackle to door, which was coated with 3 different colors' worth of thickly slapped-on paint... he spent the day wearing down the high spots with an electric sander outside (there was no way that door would ever close again if we just painted on top of the existing stuff). i was in charge of the rest of the bathroom -- sanding down the doorjamb, then 3 coats of paint on the trim and one coat on the walls and ceiling. 1 more coat on the walls/ceiling this morning and we should be done. but yesterday, by the time 5pm hit, i was falling over exhausted and soooore. we showered and dragged ourselves out for indian food, and 1/2 hour after we came home i was passed out on the couch.

another awesome home/spring thing -- jack found me a lawn service yesterday. my neighbor has been doing my lawn since i moved in, but she hasn't mown at all this year. well, she's done her lawn, but not mine. hrm. at the same time, for the past 3 weeks the house has been dark and empty most of the time, and when she's home there's a slew of people with her cleaning out the garage and putting stuff into a u-haul... i'm thinking she's prepping the house to sell. (if anyone wants to be my neighbor, here's your chance. :) ) so i'm guessing she's been too busy to mow my lawn, or even tell me. it's been getting so bad i've been mortified... no lie, it was a good 6-8 inches high in places, and packed full of weeds. so yesterday while i was finishing painting, jack spied a landscaper guy mowing another neighbor's place, and went over and asked him about prices and all and hired him for me. his rates are reasonable, and jack said he seems like a nice guy. all i know is within 10 minutes he was over mowing my lawn, and 20 minutes later it looked fantastic. what a great way to end the day -- an almost-finished bathroom, a freshly-mown lawn, the physical effects of a hard day's work, and topping it off with indian food. i was really happy last night. :)

just need the contractor to show up for his check, and the BF to wake up, and then... squeezing into that teeny bathroom to paint it. hee. i hope this paint color looks good when it's done, at almost $50 for the gallon *choke*...

last night was the annual New Wave Prom at Sex Dwarf, we had a lot of fun even though we only stayed for a couple of hours. everyone was decked out, [livejournal.com profile] xtingu had the best makeup ever and [livejournal.com profile] babyraven rocked an authentic 80s green satin dress... jack and i got a lot of compliments on our hot-topic-tastic ensembles, we got some cheers and applause when we walked in which was totally unexpected and so flattering. hee!

we missed all of you who couldn't make it! :( hopefully next year.

clicky for prom pix... )

i had no meetings scheduled for today, so decided to take the day off and wander around new hope in the rain. i haven't been there since last summer, and it's so much fun to walk around and look in all the cool shops. i have to figure out some other stuff to keep me occupied though, because the contractors are going to be here for most of the day and i don't want to be in their way.

the bathroom is coming along well. i'm hoping it will all be done by the end of the day tomorrow, so i can spend the weekend painting and decorating. yay! i'm so impatient, for some reason i actually thought it'd all be finished yesterday and was disappointed when i saw there was still a bunch to be done. i know angus will be happy when it's all over -- he's been locked in my bedroom for 2 days now, because there's too much laying around down there (staples, dust, etc) for me to let him out at night. he's actually been very patient and well-behaved, but i think that's going to come to an end soon.

and oh, i heard back from my landscaper that they're finally scheduling me for the end of next week. so not much time left before the outside has had a makeover as well. woo-hoo!

frankie manning died this morning, just a month shy of his 95th birthday, after a bout with pneumonia. if you're not an avid lindy hopper, you probably haven't heard of him... but for the lindy community, he was like our grandfather. frankie is one of the people who basically invented lindy hop... he was a regular in the harlem swing dancing scene in the 30s and was part of the core group of dancers who evolved the dance into something magical. if you want to see what lindy is really like, check out the link below. it'll blow your brains out your ears. this is REAL lindy hop -- raw, wild, exuberant... not the sterilized version you see on "dancing with the stars". frankie is the guy in the overalls who appears towards the end (and i totally forgot until several people mentioned it... he choreographed this whole sequence).

and here he is at last year's lindyfest in texas, dancing with dawn hampton (another lindy pioneer) at 94 years old. damn, he could still work it.

the amazing thing is just how NICE frankie was. he would get flown all over the world to attend lindy events, and he'd dance with anyone who asked. several years ago he came to boston for a big dance weekend we put together, and i got to dance with him last in his birthday jam (a "jam" is basically a chance for a bunch of dancers to dance with the guest of honor -- in this case, it was celebrating frankie's birthday). it's hard to explain just how huge it is to dance with frankie -- it would kind of be like getting to be a passenger in a plane flown by the wright brothers. except that frankie was so approachable and sweet and cool, so you had to keep reminding yourself that you're dancing with a legend.

sigh. his 95th birthday celebration is scheduled for next month in NYC... i wanted to go but the tickets were so expensive... now i want to go even more, to be with all my lindy peeps again and dance in his honor.

* in 2 hours, the contractors will be here to start rebuilding my bathroom. eeeEEEEeeeee!

* looking forward to a vacation day on wednesday -- painting and finishing that bathroom, and doing some 80's prom wear shopping in new hope.

* i have 2 hoop orders to make for friends. friend hoop orders are the best. :)

* the sun is up now when i wake up in the morning! i can feel my S.A.D. going away, which is so awesome. it's so nice to have energy in the morning, and to not have to nap as soon as i get home from work.

* while i'm not a big fan of temps in the 90s, i love looking forward to driving home from work with the top down. it makes every day at 5pm feel like i'm going on a mini vacation.

how much do i love my BF? right now he is in home depot, trying to hunt down some sort of special adhesive... he's built me a portable display rack for whenever i want to sell hoops at craft fairs and such. he's so awesome. of course he's happy as well because he gets to play in home depot. :)
swingchickie: (house)
today i gave the contractor the go-ahead to rebuild my little powder room. to think that after 2 years of it being gutted, i'll finally have that bathroom back, is so exciting. and it may be done as soon as next week! even better! i'll have to post before and after pix, because the "before" was so horrific. eeeeeeee!

now if only the landscaper would tell me when he can start. 3 weeks ago when i signed the agreement with him, he said everything would be done by mid april. well, it's creeping towards the end of april, and we haven't even scheduled the date yet. grrrrrrrrrr.

whew.

so tired... but in a good way. this has been such an awesome weekend, i'm really bummed it has to end!

friday was a suck day. lots of meetings in the morning, made 1000000x worse by the fact that i had a raging headache and my face was flushed. have no idea why. but i was so miserably uncomfortable, when my one afternoon meeting got cancelled i headed home to work from there the rest of the day. got a ton done, and finally managed to muffle the headache a bit towards the end of the day... by the time 5:00 hit, every fiber of my being needed to be sitting in a pedicure chair, getting my legs massaged. i'd had such a stressful week, i just needed to be taken care of for 90 minutes. i emerged from the nail salon a bit more relaxed, which saved jack from having to deal with me being a stressball.

saturday morning i was up super early to clean the house and do some last-minute grocery shopping for a get-together with some of the philly peeps. i'd planned this over a month ago, to have everyone come over so they could see my gorgeous weeping cherry tree in full bloom... not only did the tree hold onto its petals for the occasion (it's raining petals in my yard today, so we juuuust made it), but the weather was a spectacular 80 degrees. it was a perfect spring day, and so amazing to spend it with loved ones, eating and drinking and celebrating birthdays and laughing. oh, and hooping! can't forget hooping! :)

the last of the peeps left around 8pm... by 9:30 jack and i were both snoring in front of the TV. we're such party animals.

slept like a rock last night, with the cool spring air flowing through the open window. aaaaaaahhhhhh. spent today in spring wardrobe mode -- i did my laundry, switched out all my winter clothes for my spring ones, and hit the mall to get a couple of colorful accessories to perk my wardrobe up a bit. now i'm ready for bed after so much running around!

i hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend as well... now let's see if the good vibe continues through the week!

oh -- and a few photos from yesterday:

hugging the tree
happy birthday, tree!

you can never have too many hoops! ([livejournal.com profile] boutell and [livejournal.com profile] opadit -- would you and E be cool with my adding this to my site?)

70 degrees today... thank you, THANK YOU mother nature for hooking me up. this has been such a stressful week, and driving home from work with the top down this afternoon will be the perfect way to end it. WOO freakin' HOO! and 70 again tomorrow... this is heaven.

you know what else is heaven? my weeping cherry tree is in massive full bloom right now. i'm starting to see a few tiny petals on my deck, so it should be raining pink in the next few days. for now, this is the beautiful sight i get to see out my kitchen windw every day:

Dr. Seuss tree

and another beautiful sight: hoops ready for me to ship today. every time i make a hoop for someone, i get so giddy because they're all so pretty! ([livejournal.com profile] inkuwait - yours are the first two, they'll be on your doorstep next week!)

hoops ready to ship

and last but not least: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JILL-O!!!!!!!!!
swingchickie: (shag scorpio)
hoop sales continue to roll in. fun! and once again, i got an order for a hoop i don't have listed on my site. this time it's the HulaWeen, the glow-in-the-dark one i only bring out in the fall. whaddaya know.

the tix for my house concert with mark erelli are starting to sell... if for some reason i missed getting you the info, and you'd like to come, post here and i'll send you the details.

and my observations of the day:
good customer service: my dentist called me personally yesterday to see how i was feeling after all the work i ahd done on monday. she's so nice. they sent me home with a little "goodie bag" containing a bottle of water and a packet of advil... then she called to check in. i just love my dentist.

bad customer service: i finally heard back from the spa company about my awful customer service experience on our cruise. they're refunding me the $50 i was overcharged for the massage itself, but refuse to acknowledge that the other spa employees lied to me about specials when i first went to book it. grrrrrrrr.
swingchickie: (kikkoman)
just got back from 3 hours of drilling at the dentist. the novocaine is just starting to wear off... this is the part i haaaaaaate. the left half of my lip, tongue and jaw are tingling and itching beyond belief, and there's nothing i can do to make it stop. this sucks.

jack and i are going to be hoop-making machines tonight, which will hopefully help take my mind off of the mouth. have i mentioned lately that he's completely awesome? all the lowes stores stopped using the connectors we prefer to make our hoops... the new ones they're stocking are longer in the middle, which creates a long flat part where the 2 connected parts meet. i don't want that, i think it looks bad. so he spent half the day researching where we could get the connectors i like, and found a distributor a few states over... in the meantime, he discovered that the lowe's in quakertown had 3 boxes left before they were switching their stock to the new ones (they sell them individually), and he bought every single one. 150 connectors. w00t! he rocks.
swingchickie: (angus)
because of all the knots in my back, i dug into the back of my closet and found a little hand-held massager thing from bath & body works i'd bought a million years ago. last night jack was goofing off with it, and decided to see if the buzzing would freak angus out. just the opposite -- he went crazy in love over it. i had to shoot some video of his kitty massage because it was cracking me up so much...

swingchickie: (krispy kreme burger)
me: do you smell burning rubber?
jack: yeah.
me: what could be burning?
jack: [sits up in bed, looks around in the dark]
jack: it's not burning rubber. it's a skunk.

and there went the rest of my night's sleep. the smell is so strong, you'd swear the skunk sprayed inside my house. i don't know where the little guy is, or where he sprayed... i just hope the rain washes some of it away because it's EVERYWHERE. gah.

what a lovely spring saturday, watching the rain out the window while i drink my coffee. the flowers i planted in my deck boxes yesterday are slurping it all up eagerly. i was on a tear yesterday -- by 9am, i'd planted all the deck flowers, washed a sink full of dishes, and made 2 hoops. by early afternoon, i'd made another hoop and shipped all 3, and designed and ordered business cards with my local staples store. and this is all with a full schedule of regular office work tackled as well. and now i have to fill ANOTHER hoop order that came in during the day... too funny.

i'm having my traveling dreams again, although these have been more about living somewhere else instead of just being in a hotel. just this week, one night i dreamt i was living somewhere in africa... another night, that i was on vacation with some friends and had to take a plane from st. maarten to jamaica... last night the dream was that i was going back to college and moving into my dorm. unsettled much, jenn?

oh. my.

so, a costume shop owner in RI was charged with cyberstalking one of her cometitors. basically, she went online and signed them up for all sorts of stuff, which caused them to get a whole slew of unwanted phone calls. so the local RI NBC affiliate went to her shop to get her side of the story.

this is so uncomfortable to watch.

is anyone else as impressed as i am over how the reporter is actually able to stay so professional throughout this whole thing?

um.

i got 3 hoop orders today, after having just a trickle the last few weeks. is it the google adwords? warmer weather bringing all the hard-core hoopers out? who knows. what's crazy though is that one of the hoops someone ordered is one i don't even have on my site anymore! how is it possible that someone could have placed a paypal order for a hoop that i don't even have listed anywhere? freaky.

went to lowe's after work... a much better experience than the cluster-F last sunday. the place was almost empty. picked up some gorgeous flowers for my deck boxes -- phlox and 2 others that i don't remember the names of. one of them smelled awesome as i was driving home, woo-hoo! i can't wait to plant them, they're so pretty. and they're all perrennials, so after this i don't have to replant those darn boxes anymore.

i also discovered that something is resurrecting itself in the barren area that i'm having landscaped in a couple of weeks! it's either hydranges or hostas. whatever it is, everything i planted there completely died last summer, so i give the little buggers points for tenacity. now i just have to figure out where to re-plant them before the backhoes come.
swingchickie: (meerkat)
one sign of the "eh" economy: junk mail. has anyone else noticed an increase in their junk e-mails over the last couple of months? companies that had never sent me e-mails before (like sears, who i have a credit card with) are now starting to flood my inbox with offers and deals. bleh. same with local businesses -- one thing that stinks about being a homeowner is how many flyers i get on my door or mailbox or driveway from local businesses all year. every day when i come home from work, i have to chase paper that blew off my mailbox or door. now that warmer weather is creeping in, all the lawn services and home improvement companies are papering the neighborhood trying to drum up business. and i get it, business is probably slow and everyone needs to keep going... but those flyers are more likely to steer me away from them.

facebook continues to amuse me. i just added a bunch of friends from all different periods of my life, including a girl i was good friends with until i moved to kuwait after 5th grade. she was this little nerdy, brilliant girl with thick glasses and amazing artistic skills... now she's a stunningly beautiful woman, about to have a baby, and she lives in the same town as me. too funny.

i really need to start pulling together a hooping routine i've had in my mind for a while. this is the wrong week to start, because i'm so exhausted from work and the shoulder is healing (but starting to feel better, thanks [livejournal.com profile] swingdoc). but of course that means i'm beating myself up for unwinding at night instead of working on it. *chuckle*
swingchickie: (house)
feelin' pretty accomplished this evening. took care of a lot of stuff on my to-do list: 3 loads of laundry, cleaned up all the downed branches in my yard, ran a bunch of errands*, and made a crockpot full of taco soup for the week. got to ride with the top down while i was out and about, yay! (had to take advantage of it considering it's supposed to rain every day this week.) it's funny -- when the weather is gorgeous like today, i freeze up like a deer in the headlights... i have no idea what to do. if i were in boston, i'd hop on the T and wander around the city... but living where i do, since i have to drive everywhere, i just feel like "duh". i need to have a destination in mind, and it makes me stupid. i need to kick that... i spent the entire winter bitching about the cold, so i want to take advantage of every sunny day that comes along!

another thing i want to do -- figure out what the hell is going on with my shoulder. just as my vertigo and spasmy back are almost back to normal, over the last few days my left shoulder (the one that's affected by both a pinched nerve and an old gym injury) has been screamingly painful at night. i wake up over and over again with the socket on fire and all of the muscles seized up, and toss and turn to try to find a comfortable position. it completely sucks. i really want to start hooping and taking dance classes again, but god it's hard to when i feel like this. gah.

on tap for tonight: filling some hoop orders. the new line is selling pretty well, i even have someone who wants one shipped to france. heh!

*a little lesson for everyone: do not watch HGTV on a sunday morning in the spring. otherwise, like me, you will get all inspired to do a complete overhaul on your yard, and will wind up at lowe's bumping into thousands of other like-minded homeowners as you try to squeeze through the crowded garden section.
