i haven't weeded my landscaping in just about 3 weeks. 3 weeks isn't a super long time... unless you're in my backyard. why? because i have these GIANT FREAK WEEDS that spring up overnight if you're not out there every second.
one in particular is really freaking me out, it's so big. it's going completely Audrey II on me; i'm afraid it's going to climb in my upstairs window one night and strangle me.
weed:

me with the weed:

yes, it's taller than me. from nothin to over 5' tall in 3 weeks. ugh, i'm so skeeved.

i HAVE to live in this house.
Aug. 26th, 2009 09:31 pmthis is glorious.
damn you,
bohemianrapsody, for once again turning me on to a totally addictive site.
damn you,
what a shame about ted kennedy's passing this morning. of all things though, i was suddenly reminded of something i read many many years ago in some local rag -- the city paper, perhaps? -- that now has me cracking up. i can't belive i remember it like 15 years later. it's called "the kennedy jig" (sung to the typical irish jig tune):
ohhhhhhhhh...
your brother is dead
and your brother is dead
and your wife is a drunk
and your brother is dead
and your mother's senile
and your brother is dead
and your son has one leg
and your car doesn't float.
ok, back to work for me...

i got a crazy idea yesterday, and i'm thinking it through to see if it'd work.
the superstar hoops have been selling well this year, but i want to do more to raise money for star's memorial scholarship fund... i'm thinking about sponsoring a writing contest through tailspin. it'd be open to high school students in the philadelphia area... and they'd have to write a piece of a certain length (essay? short play? anything?)... topic: zombies? dancing? hula hooping (since i'd be sponsoring it)? essays would be judged by a panel of local philadelphia writers (hopefully some of my local philly peeps), and the winner would get a custom-made hoop and a private lesson from me. a small entrance fee ($10?) from each writer would be donated 100% to star's fund.
gotta think about this for a while. is a hoop and private lesson enough of a prize to get students interested in the contest? (although if someone's really into writing, which is what star's scholarship is about, maybe the hoop doesn't even matter?) how would i get the word out? what would the subject, format, length be? hmmmm.

dr. oz giveth, and dr. oz taketh away.
Aug. 24th, 2009 12:23 pmthe dr. oz show hooping segment has been put on hold. *weep* just heard from the producer, they're going with other topics for their launch episodes and will get back to me once they know when they'd like to reschedule. having worked in entertainment before, i know that "reschedule" could mean "next week", "next year", or "never". we shall see.
the good news in all of this is that i don't have to scramble to practice, buy a new outfit, make a bunch of hoops for the show, update my website, etc all while dealing with a crazy work schedule.
AND, it's motivated me to get back on track with my healthy eating and hoop practicing. that's a Good Thing.

so, the past few days, every time i've gone into duck's little quarantine room the rug has been folded over. this is a huge heavy area rug that jack bought to make him more comfortable... and with the duckster being so little, i couldn't imagine how the rug got that way. this morning, i found out:
the first time i saw him do this today, i laughed until i cried. he's not only smart, and strong, he is dead-set on showing this rug who's boss.

oh no! it's monday!
Aug. 10th, 2009 06:35 pmand monday is "lotion day" for the duckster. once a week i have to wet him down and then cover him in this lotion that's supposed to keep the ringworm spores from going bonkers... he's a good sport about it, but you can tell by the look on his face that he's not a big fan:
do not want, momma. *pout*

okay, you take this offa me now?

ooooh, that little face!

Aug. 8th, 2009 12:28 pmso, the people who live directly behind me have finally put their house on the market, after months of cleaning, fixing, and hauling stuff away. (if you know of anyone who'd like to live in the 'burbs and who wouldn't suck as a neighbor, let 'em know.) please, oh PLEASE let them get close to their asking price, so that the value of my house starts to go up again, please please please.
anyway, this morning my awesome eagle-eyed boyfriend spotted this beauty on their curb, which is now sitting proudly in my dining room:

as you can see, it has been given the angus seal of approval. :)
it's missing some of the stereo components inside, but if nothing else it makes a really cool sideboard-looking thing.

saturday morning musings
Aug. 8th, 2009 08:13 amwow. i slept for 9 hours last night, and feel like a new person. i wish i could sleep in like regular people... instead, i get my extra sleep by zonking out in front of the TV at 9pm. i'm so exciting. note to self: if i ever need to get a good night's sleep, all i need is a big steak off the grill and a glass of wine. zzzZZZZzzzz.
thanks to the awesome
derbyhat, i now know that my hoop-and-lesson combo actually was raffled off last weekend. the person who ran the dance just never replied to my e-mail. another note to self: check with a person directly before posting an uncaffeinated rant about the situation.
fun, fun weekend ahead. this afternoon i'm going to get to see some old college friends (who i haven't seen since graduation, whoa), and tomorrow is a mall marathon to get some (hopefully on sale) new work clothes. in the meantime, duck has had his morning snorgle, i've had my coffee, and it's time to make a hoop that i'm dropping off to a customer this morning who lives about a mile away.
happy weekend!

Aug. 5th, 2009 07:07 ami am getting so excited about my trip to boston for J's wedding in a few weeks. i should have a lot of project stuff wrapped up by then, so i'm hoping i can really relax for those few days. one thing i'm in denial about is that i'm performing the actually wedding ceremony... i really need to buckle down this week and write my parts out. i have some good ideas, but i need to put hands to keyboard to see if they really work.
on a totally different note, i saw a news clip online today where our president brought birthday cupcakes out to helen thomas at the start of the daily white house press briefing. this may sound stupid, but i freaking love that he does stuff like that. i'm one of those people who believes it's the little things you do that show your true character... so being thoughtful enough to bring a plate of cupcakes out to her makes him a lot more real than so many other politicians. same with the whole fiasco with the harvard professor who was arrested at his own house recently -- obama made an off-the-cuff comment about it during a press moment, but then later admitted that he spoke too soon (how many politicians actually admit they misspoke?), and had the two men over for a beer. i wasn't thrilled with all the attention placed on the "beer summit", i thought that was stupid, but the fact that he wants to get people to sit down and talk about their differences hit a good note with me.

Jul. 29th, 2009 07:26 amyesterday started the next phase of yet another project i'm leading. i wasn't happy with the way things went, and will need to have a talk with my agency this morning. hrm. tomorrow and friday we'll finish up that work, so i'm hoping we can improve in those 2 days.
duck went to the doctor yesterday to get his little spots checked out. the vet is saying it could be months before he clears up completely. awwwww. otherwise everything else looks good, all his parts are where they're supposed to be... and he's in good shape, he spent most of his time on the exam table trying to play with the doctor's pen and eat the metal clips on his patient chart. lol he's becoming more talkative too -- he chirped for the whole car ride there and back, and made lots of his sqeaky door noises this morning as he played after breakfast. he's just too cute.
looking forward to getting through the rest of this week; i have a nice low-key weekend planned that should rejuvenate me a bit.

Jul. 27th, 2009 07:45 amare you a member of eHow.com? if so, can you help a gal out? i'm starting to write some hooping articles for them, and could use some high ratings for my article... there are a couple of other "how to hoop" articles written before mine that are AWFUL and i want people to have the right info. more high ratings = people are more likely to get the correct instructions.
here's the link to my article: http://www.ehow.com/how_5219889_start-hooping-around-waist-correctly.html
